In the following Makpar Fed Mission Success podcast interview, Tariq Islam, Director Technology & Solutions at Makpar; Craig Cofrancesco, Solutions Architect at Makpar; and Peter Cofrancesco, Innovation Engineer at Makpar, provide a deep-dive look at Makpar’s Fraud Detection Analytics Dashboard.

Earlier this year, the U.S. investment community experienced an unprecedented phenomenon where public users on platforms like Reddit created a “short squeeze” that was applied to the hedge funds by retail investors impacting GameStop’s stock price. The nearly defunct retailer’s stock rose from $20 per share to a high of $450 over a 3-day span.

In response, Makpar’s Innovation Lab developed a Fraud Detection Analytics Dashboard proof of concept to help a government agency prevent a similar situation from happening in the future.

What made this effort unique is that the Makpar Innovation Lab team used a combination of Pragmatic Agile development, along with a swarm methodology and human-centered design where Craig Cofrancesco actually served as the guinea pig and played the role of a government agency financial analyst.

In the end, this prototype can be easily replicated by other federal agencies. Following are the key highlights from this interview:

  • Insights into Makar’s Innovation Lab. (:50)

  • More about the overall challenge that this federal agency faced, and the Fraud Detection Analytics Dashboard. (1:55)

  • How human-centered design played a key role in this effort. (6:02)

  • Why this overall IT development methodology was unique. (8:00)
