HackUMBC Student Participants Show a Bright Future for Innovation

In late September, University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) held its HackUMBC, a 24-hour hackathon event where students came up with cutting-edge innovations for solving real-world challenges.

Complete with games and more than $5,000 in prizes, HackUMBC had teams participating in IT development around the categories of general, data, hardware and AI/ML. There were also educational workshops around how to build a start-up with no capital, as well as introduction to Linux and ethical hacking.

As a sponsor of the event, Makpar’s Technical Recruiter Sakinat Ahman attended the hackathon, and the report back was that when it comes to innovation development, the kids are more than alright.

For example, one of the participating teams developed a transportation app for tracking the UMBC buses. In addition, the third place team from Salisbury University used AI to develop an opt-in web application for private cameras to help identify and locate missing persons and wanted individuals using facial comparison.

Student participants were also given plenty of t-shirts, stickers and swag. Speaking of stickers, here’s the official Makpar HackUMBC sticker:

In addition, the participants came from diverse backgrounds with many woman participating. It is clear that the future of technology is in great hands with this new generation of innovation pioneers.
