Data Privacy Week: Increasing Role of Government and Data Privacy

We live in a world overrun with data, and it’s only proliferating at an astounding pace. In 2022, it was estimated that consumers and businesses generated 1.145 trillion MB of data per day. This includes everything from social media usage, Google searches, text messages, emails and video watching.

With this much data being generated and ultimately being used to track and understand our preferences, the topic of data privacy has never been more important.

This is why the National Cybersecurity Alliance is hosting its annual Data Privacy Week (January 22nd to 28th) to educate individuals and businesses about the importance of online privacy.

And the U.S. government is one of the biggest producers of data in the world, which is making data privacy is an ongoing priority. As such, it is critical to create sound governance and policies for striking a balance between privacy and security.

Last year, we published a deep-dive blog post on how government leaders can achieve this balance, while also ensuring that their agencies meet governance and data custodianship goals. The blog post also discussed how data privacy should be the number one priority, and agencies should consider a Data Privacy Offer role at the leadership level.

In addition, we published a “Cybersecurity Best Practices” blog post in 2020 that provided tips for data privacy at government agencies. Specifically, we recommended that agencies secure data at rest and in motion to keep identification information (PII) from being stolen by an attacker.

Since data privacy is an ongoing concern for our nation, the American Data Privacy and Protection Act (if passed) could advance the privacy rights of all consumers. In the meantime, it’s vital for everyone to play a role in protecting their online privacy.

This is why Data Privacy Week is important, and Makpar supports all government efforts to enhance overall cybersecurity and data protection.
